From the Sovçy to the Smartphone: How Modern Matchmaking Works for Turkmen Brides
By NikahCity Matchmaking Team
Long before apps and websites, a Turkmen family looking for a good bride or groom did not post anything online. They called a sovçy — a respected matchmaker, often an older woman or a trusted relative — who knew every family in the area and could be relied on to keep secrets.
That tradition never disappeared. It simply changed its clothes.
The sovçy: the original private matchmaker
In old Turkmen custom, when a young man's family wished to marry him, they sent matchmakers to the girl's family. The visit was polite, indirect and full of meaning. Guests would speak about the weather, the harvest, the health of relatives — and only slowly come to the real reason for their visit.
The girl's family rarely said yes at the first meeting. To agree too quickly was seen as undervaluing the daughter. They would say: "We will think. We will ask." And they really did ask — about the young man's character, his family's reputation, his work, his faith.
Only after several visits, and with the girl's agreement, would the families move to the next steps: gifts, the agreement on the galyň (the bride-gift paid by the groom's family, a custom that still exists in many families today), the engagement, and finally the nikah and the wedding.
Why Turkmen families still prefer a matchmaker
You might think modern young people would reject all this. In fact, many Turkmen women still prefer a careful, mediated introduction. Here is why:
- Reputation matters. In close communities, a woman seen chatting with strange men online can be gossiped about. A matchmaker protects her name.
- Families want to be involved. A good matchmaker speaks with parents, not just with the bride.
- Safety. A woman wants to know a man has been checked, that his intentions are serious and that he is really free to marry.
- Seriousness. A matchmaker filters out men who only want to chat, flirt or play.
A small story. A young doctor from Mary told us she had deleted every dating app after one month. "Every man wanted photos first and questions about my family last," she said. "With a matchmaker, the first question was about my values. That is when I knew I was in the right place."
The modern Turkmen bride
Today's Turkmen bride may live in Ashgabat, Istanbul, Moscow, Dubai or Minsk. Many studied abroad. She uses a smartphone, follows fashion, and may speak three languages. Yet when it comes to marriage, she usually wants the same things her grandmother wanted:
- A Muslim husband with serious intentions and good character.
- Respect for her family and an understanding that her parents will want to know him.
- A clear plan — where the couple will live, how he will provide, how they will raise children.
- Patience — she will not rush into marriage after two messages.
Many are open to an international marriage, especially with men from Türkiye (whose language is close to Turkmen), the Gulf countries, Europe and other Muslim communities. Some are ready to relocate; others want a husband who visits and builds trust first.
How to approach a Turkmen bride the right way
If you are serious, here is our honest advice:
1. Lead with intention, not compliments. Say clearly that you are seeking marriage.
2. Ask about her values and family before her appearance. She will notice.
3. Do not pressure her for private photos or quick decisions. That ends things immediately.
4. Expect her family to be involved. See it as protection, not an obstacle.
5. Be honest about your situation — previous marriages, children, finances, where you live.
6. Learn a few words. "Salam", "Sag boluň" (thank you) and a respectful question about her mother will open many doors.

- Men speak with a manager first, so we understand your intentions and expectations.
- Introductions happen privately and respectfully, with families respected at every step.
