Polygyny in Islam: A Simple Guide to Plural Marriage

By NikahCity Matchmaking Team

You have probably heard the word "polygamy". It means having more than one spouse. But did you know this word is not quite correct when we speak about Islam?

When a man has more than one wife, the correct word is polygyny. It comes from old Greek words: "poly" means many, and "gyne" means woman. Polygamy, on the other hand, is a general word that also includes a woman having many husbands — and that is not allowed in Islam. So when we talk about Muslim marriage, the right word is polygyny.

It is a small detail, but a good one to know.

What the Quran Says

Polygyny is not a modern invention and not a cultural accident. It is written clearly in the Quran. In Surah An-Nisa (4:3), Allah says:

This verse is very important. It allows a man to marry up to four wives — but with a strong condition: he must be just and fair with all of them. Fair in money, in time, in housing, in kindness. If a man cannot be fair, the Quran tells him: marry only one.

So polygyny in Islam is not a free ticket. It is a serious responsibility.

Why Is It Accepted Among Arabs?

In Arab culture, polygyny existed long before Islam. Islam did not bring it — Islam limited it and gave it rules. Before Islam, a man could have as many wives as he wanted, and women often had no rights at all. The Quran put a limit: maximum four, and only with justice.

That is why polygyny feels natural in many Arab families even today. In the Gulf countries — Saudi Arabia, the Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait — it is a normal part of life. A respected man who treats his wives well is admired, not judged. Each wife often has her own home or her own apartment, her own budget, and clear rights protected by religion and by law.

The Benefits, Explained Simply

People who do not know this tradition often ask: why would anyone want this? Here are the real, practical benefits that scholars and families mention:

1. Care for women. In many societies there are more women than men, especially after wars and conflicts. Polygyny means more women can have a husband, a home, children and protection — instead of staying alone.

2. No secret affairs. Islam is honest. Instead of a hidden girlfriend or a secret second family, everything is open, legal and respected. The second wife is a wife — with full rights, not a secret.

3. Support between wives. Many people are surprised, but co-wives often help each other: with children, with cooking, with the household. In a good family, they can become like sisters.

4. More children, stronger family. Large families are loved in Islam. Children from plural marriages grow up with many brothers and sisters, a big warm family around them.

5. A solution for widows and divorced women. A woman who lost her husband or went through a divorce does not stay without support. She can become a respected wife again.

Polygyny in the Northern Caucasus Today

You may think polygyny lives only in Arab countries. But it is also common in the Northern Caucasus — in Dagestan, Chechnya and Ingushetia — even today.

In Dagestan, with its many Muslim peoples, a second or third wife is quietly normal, especially in the mountains and villages. In Chechnya and Ingushetia, polygyny fits well with the old traditions of strong clans and large families. Sometimes these marriages are registered only religiously, through nikah, not in the state office — but inside the community they are fully respected.

Why does it continue? Because people there see the same benefits the Arabs see: women are cared for, families grow, and a man proves his honour by treating every wife with justice.

Is It for Everyone?

Honestly — no. Polygyny asks a lot from a man. He needs enough money for two households, enough time, enough patience, and a very fair heart. Many good Muslim men choose one wife, and that is completely fine. The Quran itself says justice between wives is very hard.

But for the right man, and for women who choose this life with open eyes, polygyny can be a beautiful, honourable arrangement — built on faith, honesty and clear rules.
